Hoe werd Nederland een ontmoetingsplaats voor Europese muziek?

In dit programma klinkt de romantische traditie van Brahms, verankerd in Nederland door Julius Röntgen, mede-oprichter en directeur van het Amsterdams Conservatorium. In de 20e eeuw werd deze lijn voortgezet door Géza Frid, later directeur van het Rotterdams Conservatorium, en door Johan Victor Dahlberg (1915–1946), een jonge componist met Surinaamse wortels die binnen het Nederlandse muziekleven zijn stem vond.

Een muzikale reis langs traditie, identiteit en de kracht van culturele ontmoeting.

In this program, we trace a musical journey across borders and generations.
Johannes Brahms represents the great Romantic tradition that shaped concert life throughout Europe — including the Netherlands. His Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major remains one of the most intimate and lyrical works of the 19th century.

That tradition found firm ground in Dutch musical life through Julius Röntgen, co-founder and later director of the Amsterdam Conservatory, who played a crucial role in shaping generations of musicians.

In the 20th century, the Netherlands continued to attract and form composers. Géza Frid, who settled in the Netherlands in 1927 and later became director of the Rotterdam Conservatory, helped modernize Dutch musical education.

Johan Victor Dahlberg (1915–1946) represents a younger voice within this landscape — a composer shaped in the Netherlands while carrying Surinamese roots, bridging identity and tradition.
